The problem with art supply stores is that most of them give short shrift to everything outside of oil paints and craft supplies. But when you're looking for sculpture materials, Michael's just isn't gonna cut it. Thankfully, there's at least one general-purpose art supply store left in Minneapolis. The Art Cellar is located inside of the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. The shop is open to the public, but it exists primarily to serve the needs of the students at MCAD. Consequently, the Art Cellar carries a wide range of supplies at reasonable (and often heavily discounted) prices. Yes, you'll find plenty of oil paints, but printmakers and sculptors have not been forgotten. Whether you are looking for Japanese paper, a bottle of photo emulsion, or a respirator mask, you'll find it at the Art Cellar. The staff is friendly, and the snarky handwritten signs might just bring a smile to your face.
