Best of

the Twin Cities

If any legend embodies the Minnesota ethos, it's that of Paul Bunyan. He had superhuman strength, which he used not to cram himself into a showy spandex suit and skip over buildings in a single bound, but toward a hard day's work for the benefit of humble homesteaders. His outsized persona gave us much of our Minnesota flair: From his flannel comes the winter uniform of every indie concertgoer; from his boots, the fancy leatherworks of Red Wing; from his hard-earned appetite, the fluffiest pancakes known to man, the cheesiest Jucy Lucys in existence, and more craft beer than you can shake a stein at. And yes, from his famous companion, the babeliest babes in all the land. This year we've seen our finest Minnesota-made goods exported to shops around the country: The lumbersexuals of Brooklyn are wearing our boots, California's rich and famous are lounging about in our Faribault blankets, and the design world is smitten with the clean lines and minimalist style of our Scandinavian forebears. Made in Minnesota is no longer the mark of a humble homesteader.

In these pages, we celebrate all that is Minnesota made, from the handcrafted goods to the homegrown characters. Keep this bound version at hand for a reminder of all there is to love about the Twin Cities, or check out the entire issue online at for easy reference. Just be sure to keep supporting the people, places, and activities that make this state the star of the North. If there's one thing we've learned from Paul Bunyan, it's that legends aren't simply born. They're made.
