Best Picnic Spot

Shadow Falls Park Preserve

Don't judge a park by its size. Shadow Falls Park Preserve may have nothing on Lake Nokomis's expanse, or Minnehaha Falls' facilities. But for the best place to picnic, this small park, which sits at the intersection of South Mississippi River Boulevard and Summit Avenue on the west side of St. Paul, has many of the Twin Cities' better known parks beat. For the perfect spot, hike up the park's hill to the very top and put down your picnic blanket in the clearing overlooking the river. While you eat, take in the view. Afterward, hike over to the falls themselves, or down to the Mississippi. Keep your eyes open for wildflowers.
