What a difference two years makes. At this time in 2012, Minnesotans were worked into a lather over whether our state Constitution should be amended to make gay marriage illegal forever and ever. Boy, did that backfire! The amendment defeat and accompanying tidal wave of DFL support generated gay-friendly momentum that culminated with Gov. Mark Dayton signing a marriage equality bill into law at the end of the session, making Minnesota the first state in the Midwest to legalize gay marriage through legislative means. Now all Minnesotans have the freedom to marry whomever they want, regardless of sexual orientation. That's serious progress, especially compared to where we were just 700 days ago.
