Best Place to Take Out-of-Town Guests (2014)

The Midtown Greenway

When trying to explain to out-of-towners what makes the Twin Cities so great, no one would fault you for sputtering, "Well, it's just... everyone's so cool here!" For a better explanation, take guests to the Midtown Greenway, the onetime rail corridor repurposed into a walking and biking highway. On a summer day, serious cyclists whiz by, a painter works on a mural, and a forager dips into the Greenway's public juneberry orchards. It's a tableau of what makes the city great. While your visitors people-watch, you can explain to them that the Greenway connects the Chain of Lakes with the Mississippi River. You can drop something about the perks of living in a city with a landscape oriented around its people. You can pedal a Nice Ride over to the beautiful architectural features along the path, like the Martin Olav Sabo suspension bridge over Hiawatha, and inform your guest that the Greenway is plowed in the winter and lit at night. Not done bragging? For good measure, throw in the fact that the Greenway tops lists of the best urban trails in the country.
