When the Mill City Cafe closed temporarily, fans bemoaned the loss of its famed veggie burger, piquant Bloody Marys, and most of all, its cinnamon wild rice pancakes. So when the restaurant re-emerged, re-vamped with a big time bar program and more adventurous eats in a new northeast Minneapolis location, we were relieved to see they didn't change a thing about their signature brunch item. Alternative pancakes made with buckwheat or oatmeal or something equally healthy-sounding are often dense and dowdy — the opposite of what you want in a syrup-soaked flapjack. But that's just not so with these wild rice cakes. The grains lend crunchy texture, as does the sprinkle of house-made granola that's served on top of the stack, and the sour fruit flavor that comes through from the apples and dried cranberries keeps the whole creation from being too sweet. It's really a perfect breakfast bite.
