For the rest of the country, this may have been the year of the cronut, but there's no sign of regular doughnut decline in the Twin Cities. Did we finally give in to our baser instincts and accept that pretty pastries are a totally legit after-bar treat? Or did we just find ourselves undeniably intrigued by confections made with peanut butter, bacon, cocktail bitters, and various tropical curds, inspired by previously non-doughnut-related holidays, in the shape of everything from First Avenue wall stars to crinkly pink brains for the Zombie Pub Crawl? If we did, it's all because of Glam Doll Donuts, a bakery that's not only drawing national attention to our sweets scene, but has quickly established itself as a student hangout, artists' space, music venue, and neighborhood coffee shop, all rolled into one doughy disc. Though their greatest hits remain the same for us, like the simple citrus and ginger raised glazed and the Femme Fatale with its appropriately enchanting fresh raspberry curd, we went gaga for this year's new additions. We drooled over Night Moves, squiggled with blackberry jam, boozy blackberry Hennessy, and bits of brown sugar, and even got ourselves a pot pie doughnut, with all the comforts of chicken pot pie in a more portable form. What will the ladies and gents of Glam Doll roll out next? We have no idea, but they certainly still have our attention.
