Best Author We Like to Claim as Our Own

Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman. His name has been tossed around a lot this past year, and for good reason. The British writer had one of his busiest years yet in 2013 with the publication of several books, including a couple of children's books and his first adult novel in eight years (The Ocean at the End of the Lane) as well as the highly anticipated return to The Sandman graphic novel series. On top of that, he penned a Doctor Who episode and performed around the world with his wife, Amanda Palmer. Since the British writer moved his family just outside of Minneapolis in the early 1990s, he's taken to our Twin Cities swimmingly and has been inspired by the Midwest. While he's been on the road plenty this year — a massive American signing tour will do that — he's found time to come back to the Twin Cities to wind down, at least for small chunks of time. And yep, we're still claiming him as one of our own. Gaiman's making a rock-star-level name for himself, but he told us earlier this year that he'll keep the Addams Family-style homestead that he bought all those years ago. There's no place like home, and there's definitely no writer like Neil Gaiman.
