It's not every day that you have the chance to get inked by a genuine living legend. But that's exactly what you can do if you visit Don Nolan at Acme Tattoo in St. Paul. Born in Connecticut, Nolan began his tattooing career in 1955, and is one of several people credited with helping to jumpstart the tattoo renaissance of that era, along with Don Ed Hardy. He opened Acme Tattoo with his wife, Tanika, in 1988 and moved it to Arcade Street two years later. Nolan has traveled and tattooed seemingly everywhere, and known everyone, including Norman Keith Collins, a.k.a. "Sailor Jerry" because the seamen were his best tattoo customers. Nolan is a link through five decades of tattooists perfecting the art. Getting inked by him is like having one of the Old Masters paint your portrait.
