For Heimie's Haberdashery owner Anthony Andler, dressing the citizens of St. Paul is in his blood. His great-grandfather Heimie first settled in St. Paul with his family, where he opened a tailoring shop on Old Seventh Street. When his son Ralph returned from World War II, the two of them scaled up operations by opening a retail shop, Heimie's Menswear, to accompany their tailoring services. Andler apprenticed under his grandfather Ralph, eventually became a designer and artisan of fine leather handbags and hunting gear, and in 2004 reopened Heimie's in honor of his grandfather, where he and his helpful staff of haberdashers continue to sell bags and hunting gear alongside the wares gentlemen of his great-grandfather's era would have shopped for: tailored clothing, cigars, hats, cuff links, money clips, cigar cases, fountain pens, flasks, and fine footwear. You can even treat yourself to a shoeshine or hot lather shave while visiting their spiffy and very masculine store in the historic Hamm Building, and breathe in the memories of a time when streetcar bustle, not light-rail construction noise, ruled downtown St. Paul.
