Minnesotans love a bargain, even in the arts. With the exception of special exhibits, the halls at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts are always free. Have a few minutes to kill before a Children's Theatre Company show, or just looking for a bit of calm on a busy afternoon? You can check out one (or more) of the museum's collection of classics, from Van Gogh to Monet to Picasso, or perhaps delve into examples of 5,000 years of Asian art. If you are willing to pony up a bit of cash (or join MIA), you can have access to the string of impressive ticketed exhibitions, which in the past year have included a collection of Rembrandt paintings and drawings and examples of China's famous terracotta warriors. And if you want to make a special night of it, MIA offers evening events every third Thursday of the month, in which you can not only indulge in the art but listen to live music and drink to your heart's content.
