Nestled into the southwestern corner of Bloomington, Hyland Lake Park Reserve offers an oasis of accessible nature just minutes from the bustle of the city. Its 17 miles of trails wind around lakes, through sun-dappled forests and sweeping prairie grasses and meadows, up serious glute-chiseling hills, and over terrain ranging from paved paths to leaf-encrusted dirt trails. With its ample parking, strategically placed maps, welcoming visitors center, and well-groomed trails, it's not exactly an untamed wilderness experience, but as a place to try out your trendy new minimalist footwear and feel the earth beneath your feet, it's hard to beat. The sheer variety of terrain and scenery makes the miles fly by, and it's close enough to REI that you can swing by on your way to the park and pick up one of those fancy hydration packs to fuel you up the massive ski hill. It also happens to be home to Chutes and Ladders, one of the biggest and best playgrounds in the Twin Cities, so you can finish off your run with a trip down the big purple corkscrew tube slide. How many other Minnesota parks can say that?
