Though Aditi Kapil wasn't born in Minnesota (she was raised in Sweden and is of Bulgarian and Indian descent), she has made the state her home since she attended Macalester College, where she studied dramatic arts and dance, and is both a resident artist at Mixed Blood Theatre and a core writer at the Playwright's Center. An actress, director, and playwright, Kapil has won national recognition recently for her writing. Her plays have been workshopped and produced around the country, and she has received several prestigious honors, such as the Stavis Playwrighting Award in 2009 and grants from TCG, the McKnight Foundation, and others. Her most recent play, Agnes Under the Big Top, was selected as a 2009 Distinguished New Play Development Project by the NEA New Play Development Program. It premiered at Mixed Blood Theatre and Long Wharf Theatre in Connecticut. The play was called a "spirit-soaring experience" by the Hartford Courant when it premiered at the Long Wharf, and the production was described as "graceful and evocative" by Variety.
