Solo Vino is the type of place you can stop by on your way home from the gym—greasy hair, pit stains, and all—and still be taken seriously. It's also one of the increasingly rare shops that focus solely on wine. At Solo Vino, almost all the wines have been handpicked and vetted by staff, and three of the shop's seven workers are certified sommeliers. Most of the staff members have worked in restaurants, so they can effortlessly suggest a Hungarian red to go with your beef stew. Solo Vino specializes in Spanish and Portuguese wines and has the Twin Cities' best selection from the region. Its buyers also prefer small, artisanal vineyards, so don't expect Kendall Jackson or Two Buck Chuck. But with 800 wines ranging in price from $6.99 to $1,000, the novice and the nerd can both strut comfortably at Solo Vino. The shop itself feels homey, like someone's personal wine cellar, with its dim lighting, handwritten signs, and overhead chalkboards. You won't find many domestics (only 5 percent) at Solo Vino, but that's mostly because customers haven't asked—and Solo Vino prides itself on responding to customers' wishes.
