For activists and converts to organic and local food, the new 13,000-square-foot Seward Co-op is the promised land. Yes, it's pricey—but hey, eating well these days costs a fortune wherever you go, and Seward's selection of produce, meats, and cheeses is the best around. The spread of Minnesota dairy is particularly impressive, as are the doughy, delicious, organic local breads. And for shoppers who favor organic produce, Seward stocks more of it than any other natural market in town; it's hard to even find a conventional blackberry or celery stick in the place. Need a home remedy? The co-op can provide that, too, with helpful staff who know their fish oil from their flax seed. From the outside, Seward's new digs are a bit, well, over-green—the fluorescent bright-green panels blaze in the sunlight and seem to shine even at night—but inside the atmosphere is, thankfully, more calm.
