Okay, readers, you win. For the past two years you've voted Randy Shaver Best Sports Anchor, and, as much as we revel in bucking convention, it's high time we give Shaver his due. (Sorry, Eric Perkins—your two-year run has come to an end. It's not you, it's us). As KARE 11's sports director, Shaver knows his way around the Minnesota sportscape, both collegiate and professional. But it's his encyclopedic knowledge of local high school athletics—on display when he hosts Prep Sports Plus—that sets him apart. Now, we don't know the first thing about prep sports, nor do we particularly care, but we know shoe leather when we see it. Covering high school athletics—more importantly, knowing, analyzing, groking them, as Shaver does—requires more than scanning the sports page or reading a teleprompter. While Shaver doesn't really have a shtick or an electric personality, he does possess something more valuable: competency and a passion for his work.
