A good pool hall is about pool, and it carries a faint aroma of seediness and stale beer, and a pall of cigarette smoke hugs the ceiling. It's frequented by taciturn men (and women, but mostly men) who bring their own sticks in battered leather cases, dour old-timers and regulars who gather at the back tables and rack 'em for hours without saying much. It doesn't sell microbrews and grilled chicken sandwiches; if you're lucky you can order from a gut-busting menu of pizza, dogs, burgers, and nachos. No other pool hall in the metro area matches that description quite like Fat Boy Billiards. The Northeast institution, said to be the oldest pool hall in Minneapolis, fits the bill on all but two of those counts: This being Minneapolis, you won't find any cigarette smoke, and you can't get alcohol at Fat Boy, which is probably just as well. You will find two floors with 18 tables, where you can play for a reasonable fee of $5.50 an hour ($6 on weekends), or $8.50 for two players ($9 weekends). Sharks on a budget can take advantage of the daily special: Shoot all day, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., for $9.50.
