West Indies Soul, formerly of St. Paul, now in the Midtown Global Market, serves the best of two worlds: home-style cooking from the Caribbean islands and the American South. That means they've got rib tips, chicken strips, and Cajun fried catfish to pair with all manner of fried okra, hush puppies, and plantains, plus greens, vegetable succotash, and candied yams. (The tuber mash certainly has enough sugar to satisfy dessert cravings, or there's always peach cobbler or sweet potato pie.) On the Caribbean side, you'll find jerk chicken, Jamaican hot beef patties, coco bread, and homemade ginger beer. Once a week, West Indies offers Deep South Sundays, which offers one meat, two sides, one bread, and dessert for $11. The dining area, a bus-your-own food court, is nothing fancy, but it's a great spot to soak up the market's cross-cultural bustle.
