BEST THEATER FOR DRAMA
Open Eye Figure Theatre
This category represents an annual embarrassment of riches, but this year the nod goes to Michael Sommers's and Susan Haas's (finally) permanent dedicated space in south Minneapolis. The "drama" that takes place there is of a particular variety, owing to Sommers's wizardry in blending live action, puppetry, and existential weirdness, and in the last year A Prelude to Faust and Eleanor's Cabinet provided ample material for those looking to fuel their dreamtime fantasies. Open Eye consistently cracks open the human skull to dredge out the uncanny subconscious stuff inside, while providing inclusion and warmth in an environment friendly to the youthful, the infirm, and those of us marking the years in between.
