Everyone has a restaurant that they don't get to go to as often as they'd like—because it's out of the way, because their loved ones don't love it as much as they do, because life gets busy. King's Fine is our number-one restaurant that we wish, wish, wish we got to more. The $9.95 buffet (served Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) is one of the best lunches in town, stuffed with sushi rolls, bulgogi, an ever-changing array of meat and fish entrees, and side dishes like kim chi, marinated tofu, and sweet pickled daikon. The dinners are full of dishes with great fire (the kimchi jigae soup should be covered by medical insurance for folks with head colds), dishes with great subtlety (the seafood pancake haemul pajeon is like a quiche of ocean), and many, many dishes with profound comforting rusticity (the mandu are sturdy as fences, the pork bulgogi is like mom's pot roast for the spicy soul). The karaoke, which heats up to an ear-splitting intensity about 10:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, vibrates with authentic Asian expat joy. Put a few bottles of shochu on the table and let it all wash over you: King's Fine isn't just the greatest Korean restaurant in town, it's one of the greatest nights out in the metro.
