If pool is just a pretense for drinking or picking up a date, there are plenty of joints in the metro with decent tables and a liquor license. If you're looking for superior competition or state-of-the-art equipment, there's a handful of spacious joints in the suburbs, including past winners Jimmy's Pro Billiards in Columbia Heights and Billiard Street Cafe in Fridley, where you can hobnob with storied players and test your skills in a variety of leagues, tournaments, or pickup games. These places are miles off the beaten path, though, and if you're like us, sometimes you just want to shoot some stick without hassling with a bunch of teenage wannabe hustlers wielding overpriced cues. Fat Boys, a little room right out of a Mamet movie, has everything you need and nothing more: decent cues, a floor full of well-kept tables (for pool, pocket billiards, and three-cushion billiards), and a cast of street-wise regulars who have a clear-eyed respect for the world's best blue-collar game. The benches are hard, the lights are appropriately dim, and the best thing at the "snack bar" is made by Frito-Lay. But there always seems to be some Chicago blues, Detroit funk, or East Coast jazz crackling through the speaker system, and once the games begin, the fast-paced pitch of the outside world seems as distant as it does ridiculous.
