Yeah, we know. The New Uptown Diner doesn't technically serve a brunch (that is, the word doesn't exist on the menu), but on Sundays it's open until 3:30 p.m. and will happily serve you excellent eggs Benedict. The black T-shirt-and-denim-clad servers strike just the right balance between affability and promptness, a welcoming comfort--no, necessity--known all too well by those recovering from Saturday night's celebrations. Servers here realize that the customers like to chat but prefer to eat. Sure, the line can snake out the front door come 11:00 a.m., but what other joint provides such a communal atmosphere where both bed-headed hipsters and 40-ish weekend warriors with kids in tow can dine in perfect harmony? Really, though, it's about the food. Mammoth-sized portions at Perkins-like prices come served atop a bed of thick hash browns that seem to dare you to finish 'em all. Go ahead and take the challenge. The Cajun breakfast (hash browns grilled golden with green peppers, spices, and mushrooms beneath eggs and warm hollandaise sauce) is a meal any Big Easy native would be proud to chow. And the Atkins-friendly steak and eggs ($6.95) have yet to be topped in our opinion. Since moving to their current location four years ago, owners John McCarty and Sherwood Gaines haven't just added to the competition--they've owned it.
