Fluffy pancakes in the morning, hearty soups and sandwiches at lunch, organic artisan breads all day, every day. And now expert, fancy gourmet dinners at night with worldwide wines and beer. What, pray tell, is there not to be in love with at French Meadow these days? Someone should give owner and founder Lynn Gordon a medal; it's as if she's seen into the hearts of all of south Minneapolis and come through to fill each and every need. Cheap dates? Check--that famous vegan chili. Solo healthy breakfasts? Check--those to-order poached eggs and fresh baked muffins. Lunch with friends? Check. She'll get the tempeh reuben if you'll get the quiche and go halfsies. Fancy-yet-still-pretty-cheap dinner date? Check. Seared ahi tuna with gorgeous locally sourced yams and chard like silk, courtesy of young chef Jonathan Grumbles. Vegan everything, for those who want it? Check. High-protein, low-carb everything else (including bread) for those who want that? Check and check mate. Lovely little ginger cookies? Need you ask? Of course, the one thing at French Meadow that no one loves is the horde of manic brunch zombies that pack the place like a Japanese subway car every Sunday. But whose fault is that? Not theirs.
