A Bit Wilder

The oldest of several Twin Cities movies-and-music-in-the-park programs regains the outdoor-film title this year by paying worthy tribute to an old master: director Billy Wilder, who died in March at the age of 95. Not only is "A Bit Wilder" (co-presented by Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board) perfectly timed, it's also ideally suited to the summer climate and the outdoor setting. After all, Wilder's movies are nothing if not hot: There's the sweltering sleaze of his pioneering film noir Double Indemnity (which begins the weekly series on July 8); the stifled romance of The Apartment (August 12); the feverishly smutty farce Kiss Me, Stupid (July 22); the scaldingly satiric One, Two, Three (July 15); the uncommonly warmhearted Sabrina (July 29); and, of course, Some Like It Hot (August 5). At press time, the Walker hadn't yet booked the local bands to play before the half-dozen Monday night screenings--but Mark Mallman and the Heat would seem like a natural.
