Sri Lanka

A recent visit to Sri Lanka (which, if you've been living under a rock, re-established itself in Calhoun Village, the strip mall that holds the MGM Liquor Warehouse northwest of Lake Calhoun) resulted in a truly fine meal, highlighted by a starter of scallops and fresh spinach leaves in piquant chutney (a vast portion); a dusky, fiery beef roti; and vegetable and cashew curry. Everything was fresh, lively, just-prepared, original, and subtly spiced--marvelous. If an all-you-can-eat buffet with 80 courses of butter-soaked chicken is what you want, all the Indian restaurants have it. But come to Sri Lanka for sophisticated, fresh-ingredient cooking of the highest order. (Not to mention the nice wine and beer list.) And--though we almost fear to add this because of the jinx risk--there's none of that old Hennepin curse of a two-hour wait for dinner.
