Even in the dead of winter, there's a surprising level of activity in the parking lot at Porky's. Perhaps against winter's bleak, gray sky the Porky's sign--a giant, brightly colored neon pig in a top hat--seems all the more inviting. Under the pig's cartoonish gaze, vehicles zoom past the drive-through window, then pull into a slot under the carport's slanted roof. Once situated, patrons fog up their windows as they munch their burgers and fries. If you opt instead to park and trot inside to order, you'll likely be treated to Beach Boys tunes over the loudspeaker, heralding the coming summer--which is high season at Porky's. On summer Saturday evenings you can dreamily venture back in time as car enthusiasts cruise along University Avenue in the Mustangs, Thunderbirds, and GTOs they painstakingly care for. Perhaps they'll stop in at Porky's for a "cruiser combo": a hamburger, two pieces of chicken, onion rings, French fries, and cole slaw, all for $4.29. For many of these car buffs, Porky's is the Twin Cities' last portal to a happier, simpler era, when the shakes were cool and the cars were hot. Even if you're not looking to be transported back in time, the root beer floats alone are worth a trip.
