Even before it became known as Eat Street, this stretch of Nicollet Avenue was home to a wide variety of food bargains. One standby is this "German-European Delicatessen," an offshoot of the Black Forest Inn. Open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., this comfy café is a lazy-eater-on-a-budget's dream come true. Let's start with breakfast: Try a potato pancake with applesauce for $2.25, an omelet with toast from $2.50 to $4.25, or an individual breakfast pastry for $1.10. Lunch specials change daily, and sandwiches are made to order, with excellent cheese options and a condiment list that includes horseradish--an amenity sorely lacking at many sandwich establishments. Sandwiches on their own are only $3.60 each, and they're available in an even better box-lunch deal including chips, a pickle, fruit, and dessert for $5.25. You can sample the German potato salad or daily soup for $1.85. Strudel & Nudel also offers takeout items--Grandma may not be fooled into believing you cooked, but she'll be pleased you didn't overspend.
