Mill City

Ordinarily it's hard to think of someplace that serves hot meals just two mornings a week as a breakfast joint. But once you've fueled up at Mill City, it's hard to kick off a weekend anywhere else. The hot standards served here from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays include eggs, pancakes, and thyme-roasted potatoes. Don't stop there, however: This tiny kitchen can add mole-kissed black beans, tortillas, and house-made mango-habañero salsa to your basics (the Mexican Breakfast, $6.50). They can whip your eggs, carbs, and veggies into a creamy quiche with a flaky crust ($5.50). Or squeeze them in alongside a platter of biscuits smothered with either sausage or portobello mushroom gravy ($5.75). If it's just too hard to choose, order the "Mama Knows Best": For $6.25, Mama--who turns out to be a genial man named Ken--will decide what you need. And being Mama, s/he usually can't help but serve you up a little of everything.
