Though it had a life span of less than 24 hours, the erroneous "news" that First Avenue would be relocating to the outlying suburb of Blaine had the merit of actually being broadcast regionwide one morning on WCCO-TV (Channel 4), with a live shot from outside the big black bus station shot the day after...April Fool's Day. As it turned out, the story was given the go-ahead on the basis of nothing more than a prank fax sent to several local media outlets on old First Avenue-style letterhead. The fax included made-up statements from club manager Steve McClellan, explaining, "We feel that our change in location necessitates a change in the sorts of bands we book." Though the fax was suspected to have come from a local Kinko's, rumor has it that the prank actually originated from the offices of the newly relaunched music magazine Toast, which now publishes weekly on the web alone ( Editor Todd Bennington and art director Ian Rans categorically deny the accusation. 'CCO ran a correction and apology the same day of the morning broadcast, at 5:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
