Bar Abilene's

Between the buckskin-colored walls and the rich cherry-hued wood booths, the entire bar area fairly sparkles at this little chunk of the New West right here in the Minneapple. So it should come as no surprise that the cocktails described on Bar Abilene's two-page margarita menu come to the table looking like translucent gems. Think of the Hibiscus margarita ($5.95) as a ruby: a deep red from the not-too-sweet hibiscus juice added to tequila and lime juice and other treasured substances. The Chimayo ($6.95), made taupe by the surprising addition of tart apple cider, could be jasper. The Elizabeth II--a crisp blend of lime juice, tequila, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier--is the grassy green of jade. The Mojito ($4.95), the same concoction as above, except with the clean flavor of fresh mint, is the dark, clear green of tourmaline. Each is well worth the trip, and the list of tequila-friendly snacks only makes them taste better. Now that Edina allows some restaurants to serve hard liquor, fans of Tejas--Bar Abilene's sister establishment--can enjoy much the same margarita menu there.
