BEST PLACE TO GO WINTER CAMPING (1999)
Cruise ships setting sail empty. Miami hotels deserted. Southbound planes taxiing around Minneapolis/St. Paul International, waiting for just one paying customer....It could happen, if more people knew how much fun it is to shovel out a camping spot after eight hours on skis; to shake the icicles from your hair each morning; to thaw food in your mouth. Sound tempting? No? Good. Go ahead and book the $99 special to Cancun. And leave the Boundary Waters to the lucky few who know there's nothing as true and as beautiful as a frozen wilderness. Between October and April no reservations are needed to enter Paradise North; just fill out the "self-issuing" permit forms available at most ranger stations and at BWCA entry points. For a list of the latter, check any local outfitter, point your browser, or pick up the phone.
