BEST LOCAL ROCK BAND (1999)
Has a punk band ever made rocking out sound like such hard work? Craig Finn's apoplectic streams of consciousness make it sound as if he's about to burst a blood vessel in his brain. Meanwhile, the rest of the band bashes about in search of a chorus with a determination that borders on the obsessive. On last year's The Entertainment and Arts, Finn provided a full alternate set of lyrics in the liner notes that were at least as coherent as those he sputtered--proving yet again it ain't what you say, it's how you say it.
