BEST FEMALE VOCALIST (1999)
Face it: Most female singers get their propers only if they do the little-girl alternative-rock coo or bellow the blues down in Koko Taylor's register. Dana Thompson does neither. Best known as the chirpy diva of the local eight-piece jazz and ragtime band the Hot Heads, Thompson is both jazzy and full of moxie while delivering her Betty Boop melodies for the swing-dancing set. With glass-shattering high notes and a commanding stage presence, she's the life of the vintage-pop party, though she sometimes seems a bit more comfortable in the country-folk mode of Marina Glass & Friends. She's as close to a female icon as the swingers are going to get in the Twin Cities, with attitude and soul to burn.
