This riveting four-part series, a joint effort undertaken by the Star Tribune, KTCA-TV, Minnesota Public Radio, and the Insight/KMOJ Public Policy Forum, highlighted the conflicts and kinships between two struggling Minnesota communities, one rural, the other urban. A video link was set up to connect politicians, pundits, scholars, and spiritual leaders gathered at Lucille's Kitchen in North Minneapolis with a group of their counterparts who'd assembled in an auditorium at the University of Minnesota at Crookston. A running dialogue simulcast on Minnesota Public Radio and KMOJ-FM ensued, encompassing issues as vital and potentially incendiary as racial diversity, the economic challenges facing rural and inner-city populations, and public (mis)perceptions concerning both communities. While often expressed terms of frustration, the hopes and dreams that came to light were so similar they were revelatory.
