BEST BLOODY MARY (1999)
So many Bloody Marys are social climbers, posing as a special juice blend or an exciting flavor sensation instead of being true to what they are: an alcoholic drink. Luckily, the dingy-but-proud Poodle Club is no fern bar entertaining notions of grandeur. It's a bar that serves liquor--no frills about it. And so each week during a narrow 15-minute window--from 10:00 to 10:15 a.m. on Sunday--the Poodle Club serves up two-for-one Bloody Marys that pack a punch instead of copping a pose. When all the world seems artificial, walk into the Poodle, plunk $2.60 on the counter, and you'll be greeted with two no-nonsense Marys, garnished with pickled carrots and green beans made right on the premises. Good for a nice kick into Sunday. And when you're looking for a little hair of the dog, why not the lair of the little dog?
