BEST UNPAVING OF PARADISE TO FEND OFF A PARKING LOT (1998)

Folks in Richfield like their cars as much as the next suburbanite, but it turns out they like their trees, too. When citizens woke up in December to discover a 3-acre section of Veterans Memorial Park had been denuded of 208 old oaks and cottonwoods in preparation for the construction of a city parking garage, they didn't just sit there and pay taxes; they demanded the city surrender the park. Richfield City Council members conceded a quick defeat after angry residents generated a lot of bad publicity about the Council's sneaky ways. The garage will be built elsewhere, new trees will be planted, and the park will be back to the way it was--in a century or so.
