Vampires, ghosts, mummies, zombies, and more will be taking over the Science Museum as it continues its adults-only Social Science program with a Halloween-themed evening. This Thursday, Social Science: Dead and Undead will explore "the creepier side of science," says program developer Julia Halpern. At the event, guests can learn about the science behind dead and undead mythologies, and there will be opportunities for socializing, dancing, and drinking.

The museum started the Social Science program in March of 2011 after opening the "King Tut" exhibit. It has since had a different theme for each quarterly event, exploring topics like the summer solstice and the science of beer and wine making.

"It's a chance for adults to explore the museum in a kid-free environment," says Halpern. The museum began the program as a way to reach new audiences who don't normally come to museum, so they can "explore the museum at a different pace," she says.

The Dead and Undead event hosts an array of presenters, including folks from the Minnesota Department of Health who will be talking about rabies and how it relates to vampire and zombie mythologies. There will also be a technological presentation about creating a modern-day Frankenstein's monster, demonstrations featuring mummified chickens, and a taxidermy how-to with a squirrel. Of course, you'll need to remember to watch out for flesh eating beetles.

Entertainment will be provided by Trivia Mafia, Science Live Theatre, DJs Simone Steppa and Frank Castle, and special-effects makeup by Faces Etc. of Minnesota.

As with other Social Science events, there will be free food sampling, including an ice-cream parlor, cupcake social, and treats from Mississippi Market. There will be bars throughout the museum for adults and over.

It's also your first chance to see the newest exhibit, "Lost Egypt," before it opens to the public.
