We played "F*ck, Marry, Kill" with Kristen Schaal
Is there anything that Kristen Schaal can't do?
Whether she's playing the psychotically obsessed NBC page Hazel Wassername on 30 Rock, psychotically obsessed Conchords super fan Mel on Flight of the Conchords, or voicing the manipulative, crazed (possibly psychotic) youngest sibling Louise Belcher on Bob's Burgers, Schaal is an unmistakable comedy force who can (and usually does) steal any scene.
She's voiced countless animated characters, co-written a sexy book of sex called The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex, and appeared in dozens of television shows and movies. The one thing all of these things have in common? They're hilarious.
This Friday night, Schaal will add "hilarious public radio show guest" to her resume, when she makes her triumphant return to MPR's Wits.
Before she joins host John Moe, Schaal took a few minutes out of her busy day to talk about comedy and cartoons, and to play a quick game of "Fuck, Marry, Kill."
You're becoming a regular Wits veteran. What is it that keeps you coming back on the show?
The weather. I like the sound of the enamel on my teeth cracking in the frozen air.
The trailer for The Hotwives of Orlando looks hilarious. Tell us more about your character.
Her name's Amanda and she's got a lot of problems. Mainly, she's an addict.
Have you watched any of the Real Housewives shows for research purposes?
I watched a few Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. My character is loosely based on Kimberly. I could only stomach a couple episodes before I get bored enough to want to read a book.
Having voiced so many different animated characters, when you close your eyes and picture yourself as a cartoon, what do you see?
I see Mabel from Gravity Falls. I share her goofy vibe. I love Louise from Bob's Burgers, but she is way cooler than me.
Last summer you were a part of the Oddball Comedy Festival. What are your plans for this summer?
I'm hoping to get invited to the Ordinaryball Comedy Festival. And if not, then I guess I'm going to be talking a big game about all the writing I'm doing in the five minutes I'm not consuming the internet.
What else are you working on at the moment?
Oh my goodness, so much writing!
If you had to play "Fuck, Marry, Kill" with Hazel Wassername, Mel from Conchords, and Wits host John Moe, who do you choose?
That's too easy. Kill Hazel, fuck Mel, marry Moe.
