Victorian Poetry Slam offers old-school romance

Right now you probably feel inundated with ads for objects to buy and commercials suggesting activities to do in order to show your sweetheart an enjoyable Valentine's Day, but dinner and a movie or chocolate and jewelry can be rather predictable. For anyone interested in a more unique experience, the staff at the James J. Hill House is ready to bring some old-school romance into your lives. [jump]

Though the theme of the evening will be Valentine's Day and romance, the evening won't consist of only ooey-gooey poetry. A variety of experiences are planned, through poems dealing with, of course, love and romance, but also temperance, sports, war, and even James J. Hill himself. Actors Craig Johnson, Laura Salveson, and Ann Daly will don 1890s eveningwear and recite the works of Dickinson, Poe, Longfellow, Browning, and others in the Hill House's opulent drawing room.

There will be time for audience members to recite their own poetry as well, so if you find yourself consumed and inspired by the old masters, don't hold back.

Reservations are recommended for the Victorian Poetry Slam, which will take place at the James J. Hill House on Sunday, February 13 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more information or to make reservations, call 651.297.2555.
