Varsity Theater is up for America's Best Bathroom 2013
Is the Varsity Theater (center) the best restroom in America?
What do you do when you want some good press and you're a company that makes bathroom supplies? You host a nation-wide search for the best restroom in America, of course.

Dinkytown's Varsity Theater is one of 10 bathrooms up for the big win in the wacky contest, now in its 12th edition.

Each year, a group of editor's search far and wide for unique, highly functional, kitschy, and retro restrooms to make their top 10. Once the list is determined, folks on the internet are invited to look through each nominee's description and picture, and vote for their favorite. The winner and the runner-up secure a place in Cintas Corporation's historic Hall of Fame. Past winners have included the ultra-modern crappers at the

in Chicago, the pretend

at Jungle Jim's International Market in Fairfield, Ohio, and the

posh and intricately decorated

Shoji Tabuchi Theater in Branson, Missouri.

Last year, the Walker Art Center was up to win (alas, the Alamo-themed Buc-ees in New Braunfels, Texas, took top honors).

Editors of this year's contest are impressed with the Varsity Theater's bathrooms, which feature whimsical elements, fine details, and easy access to the bar. Part of the blurb gushes:

The restroom, decorated with ornate, gilded mirrors, sassy text plates, and bricks laid as if by a drunken mason on bender, invites guests into an Alice In Wonderland-like grotto -- to relieve themselves and re-live childhood fairy tales. One part old-fashioned powder room one part lounge, this restroom allows concert-goers to take a break in an area from which one can still view and hear the stage. Bartenders even serve drinks over the back counter into the restroom area, offering a VIP experience to every guest.

Other nominees this year include an '80s video-game-inspired restroom in Portland, Oregon; the clean lines and glowing flower portraits of the Tampa International Airport; and a Sulphur Springs, Texas, john encased in a special glass that allows users to see out into downtown while, mercifully, passerby cannot see in.
