Top ten memorable celebrity twins
This weekend twins, triplets, quads, and their families will make a pilgrimage to Twinsburg, Ohio for the Twins Days Festival. In deference to this celebration of multiples, we've put together a list of some of the most memorable twins. Some are famous because they're beautiful, others for their precociousness, and then there are the ones we simply love because they're amazing.
Tegan and Sara Quin
These identical twins are obviously creatively in sync. Now 29, they have been performing together for half their years (they've toured with Neil Young, Gogol Bordello, and Cake), generating a viciously loyal fan base along the way. Though they perform together, the sisters prefer to live in separate cities, and even write music and lyrics for songs independently. Top 10 Sister Acts: Tegan and Sara, Breeders, Bangles
Chang and Eng Bunker
Chang and Eng Bunker were conjoined at the chest. Originally from Thailand (Siam, at the time, hence their "Siamese Twins" nickname), the two immigrated to the U.S., where they became successful and respected farmers. Though they could never be physically apart, the brothers lived independent lives. Both were married, had children, and split their time between two family homes.
Lisa and Louise Burns
They were only on the screen for mere minutes, yet Lisa and Louise Burns' performance as the Grady twins in The Shining was probably the film's most unforgettable, quotable, and terrifying. Personally, we'd rather deal with the blood in the elevator. Though their legacy is certainly the creepiest of those on our list, the twins went on to live academic--not haunting--lives. Recent reports state that Louise is a microbiologist and that Lisa holds a degree in literature and language.
Shane and Sia Barbi
True to their last name, identical twins Shane and Sia Barbi have a look reminiscent of the iconic blond doll with superhuman proportions. They made their career as models in the '90s, posing for couture photo shoots including Chanel, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, and John Galliano. They also were featured on two Playboy covers, both of which broke sales records. Unfortunately, the sisters suffered from crippling episodes of bulimia and agoraphobia during the peak of their fame. This story has a happy ending though: Together they went into recovery and later obtained degrees in nutrition. In recent years the Barbi twins have gone on to give lectures on eating disorders and healthy living, and both are very vocal with animal rights.
James and Oliver Phelps
The Phelps twins are famous for their roles in the Harry Potter franchise, playing Fred and George Weasley, two sharp-witted characters that serve up punchlines and naughty quips as often as they do magic spells. The pair have a sense of humor in real life as too, and in the past have poked fun at the online fan fic world, begging the weirdos of the internet to stop writing them into "twincest" fics (yes, this is exactly what it sounds like).
Bill and Tom Kaulitz
Long before Adam Lambert was rocking the androgynous glam look on American Idol, Bill Kaulitz of German pop rock band Tokio Hotel was already drowning in glitter and black eyeliner. And though style varies greatly between identical twins Bill and Tom--who are indeed indentical--both have obviously taken a lot of time to perfect their looks. Bill is best known for his Sonic the Hedgehog hairstyle, black eyeshadow, and skinny jeans. The less flamboyant Tom rocks dreads, baggy pants, and baseball caps. The music? Yeah, we have no idea either. You'll have to ask one of their rabid fangirls what the band actually sounds like.
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen
These twins are as much a brand as they are celebrities. They "established" their company, Dualstar, at the tender age of seven. By 2007 the Olsen twins were worth an estimated $100 million, earning them a shared spot at 11 on Forbes' list of wealthiest females in entertainment. The fraternal twins' preferences and career moves have varied in recent years. While Ashley explores the fashion world, Mary Kate has been building her acting profile with parts in movies and television, including The Wackness, a flick in which her characters takes shrooms and makes out with Ben Kingsley.
Abigail and Brittany Hensel
Born in 1990 in Carver County, Minnesota, conjoined sisters Abigail and Brittany Hansel have two separate spines, yet share a lower torso and pair of legs. Though they have appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and have been featured in two documentaries, the twins live relatively quiet lives away from the media. In high school they each passed their own drivers' test (though they drive as a team, they were required to take their own written and drivers' test separately), and they are currently enrolled at Bethel University in St. Paul.
Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren
Twins often share the same preferences and interests, so it makes sense that Ann's dear sister Abby would follow in her advice-giving footsteps. Though both penned popular columns covering the ins and outs of manners, the two were unable to work through their sibling rivalry for many years. Thankfully, they eventually managed to patch things up, agreeing that the advice world was big enough for both of them.
Billy Leon and Benny Loyd McCrary
Most people would have no idea who these twins are based on their name alone. However, anyone who ever paged through a Guinness Book of World Records in the '80s probably recognize the picture above. The pair once held a record as the World Heaviest Twins. They spent their days working as tag-team wrestlers and in stunt shows. In 1979 Billy Leon rode to the great motorcycle rally in the sky after a bike stunt went wrong at Niagara Falls. Benny passed 21 years later from heart failure.
