Three free things to do this week

itemprop

This week in free stuff to do we have a flower-filled art show, a movie screening for a major yet-to-be released flick, and a local fashion happening. Come take a look and plan your week for cheap.

Love and Friendship

(Walker Art Center, 1750 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis; 612-375-7600)

In this adaptation of Jane Austen’s Lady Susan, a recently widowed Brit (Kate Beckinsale) schemes and plans to make new romantic connections for both herself and her daughter. Chloë Sevigny co-stars as her American friend. The movie reunites the duo with director Whit Stillman, who previously worked with the actresses in The Last Days of Disco. This Wednesday's screening will feature a Q&A session with Stillman and Star Tribune film critic Colin Covert. To score free tickets, stop by the Hennepin lobby desk at 6 p.m. 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Art in Bloom: Flowers After Hours

itemprop

(Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2400 Third Ave. S., Minneapolis; 612-870-3131)

Each year, Mia hosts Art in Bloom, a multi-day celebration that features floral arrangements inspired by the museum's collection. During the happening, there will also be gala parties, talks, tours, and family events. Not all of these events are free. This Thursday's Flowers After Hours is, however. Check out these neat floral displays, which reinterpret or pay homage to artworks ranging from detailed landscapes to abstract sculptures. There will be plenty of bubbly to sip, and a "wedding processional" will feature floral fashions and other fun. 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Fashion Revolution Twin Cities

(2500 University Ave., Minneapolis)

Last week was Fashion Revolution Week, where folks around the world educated themselves and re-evaluated clothing making practices, both from a company/designer perspective and a consumer one. This Thursday, the Twin Cities leg of the festival will come together to honor the victims of 2013's Rana Plaza collapse, where over 1,000 factory workers died. The evening will feature a fashion crawl showcasing local designers, sustainable makers, and slow-fashion creators. Shop clothing, swimwear, jewelry, and more, and learn a little bit about how you can make a difference using your almighty dollar. 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
