Three free things to do this week
(331 Club: 331 13th Ave. NE, Minneapolis, 612-331-1746)
Over the years, the hosts of Blingo have managed to make the notoriously stuffy game of bingo fresh. How do they do this? By dragging it out of the church basement and into a variety of bars populated by young and young-at-heart crowds. The rules and prizes differ with each round, with different shapes required to win each time. The stakes get higher as the evening progresses, with mystery shots, Jameson shots, tacos, and a $25 bar tab all up for grabs at the 331. Winners of the final round, where you must have every single square marked, take home the coveted chalice, a golden pimp's cup worthy of any beverage, boozy or not. Blingo, which is in cahoots with the prolific Trivia Mafia, is available on various nights at the Triple Rock, Blue Door Longfellow, and Herkimer, among other spots. But Tuesday night's party at 331 from 7 to 9 p.m. is a pretty good place to start Blingo'ing.
(Harriet Brewing: 3036 Minnehaha Ave., Minneapolis, 651-225-2184)
Fladcast is a YouTube channel featuring segments hosted by Jason Fladager in which local musicians show up to answer questions and perform. This summer, he'll be taking his show on the road to Harriet Brewing for live tapings. The inaugural live event will feature Frogleg, a blues/soul/funk/rock band that summertime after-work beers on the patio were made for. Food trucks also often stop by in the evening. 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Schell's 'The Current' Beer Release Party
(Amsterdam, 6 W. 6th St., St. Paul, 612-285-3112, www.amsterdambarandhall.com)
This summer, Schell's Brewery of New Ulm has teamed up with the folks at the Current to create a limited edition brew just in time for outdoor festival season. The beer, which was released last Friday, sounds perfect for summertime, as it's a kolsch-style ale that's light and easy to drink. For the next couple of weeks, Schell's and the Current will be celebrating the fruits of their labor with a few beer parties offering free music. Thursday's installment at Amsterdam will feature tunes from the Cactus Blossoms. Tallboys can be purchased at participating bars, and you can pick up four-packs in local shops. 21+. 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
