Three Free Things to Do This Week

itemprop

This week in free things to do we have a free Scotch tasting, a riotous reading featuring Mary Mack, and an open studio party.

Come take a look and plan your week.

Whiskey for Women

(VOM FASS, Mall of America, 60 E. Broadway, Bloomington, 952-883-8800, www.mallofamerica.com)

Over the years, Scotch whiskey has developed a reputation as a dude's drink. Plenty of women, however, prefer it to white wine or sugary Cosmopolitans. This Wednesday, the folks at the oddly named VOM FASS will be inviting ladies to sample some varieties of Scotch at a free tasting party. The event, led by Stewart Laing of Hunter Laing whiskeys, will feature pours of Cragabus and Mac Spey. Novices and regular drinkers are welcome. VOM FASS will be hosting a few other happenings throughout the week as well. Many are free, while others are only about $4 a session. Reservations are required. To sign up, visit vomfassmoa.eventbrite.com. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Riot Act Reading Series

itemprop

(Dead Media, 3330 E. 25th St, Minneapolis)

Riot Act is not your typical reading series. Expect a raucous evening of entertainment featuring local wordsmiths. This installment should be as hilarious as it will be thoughtful, as Minnesota standup Mary Mack is in town and will be headlining the party. Also reading works will be Riot Act regulars Laura Brandenburg, Patrick Werle, and punk-rock poet Paul D. Dickinson. 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Art This Way <== #FallCrawl

(Solar Arts Building, 711 15th Ave NE, Minneapolis)

This weekend, many studios in northeast Minneapolis will be opening their doors for art-crawl activities. This Thursday, artists in the Solar Arts Building will be getting started a little early for Art This Way. Guests will be able to wander through gallery and work spaces, which will be hosting special exhibitions, receptions, concerts, and more. On Thursday, poet Mary Kasimor will be reading from recent works and showing off some watercolors. There will also be beer. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday.
