Three free things to do this week

This week in free stuff to do we have two Scott Seekins parties, an '80s dance night sure to entertain, and a cool art show featuring Twin Cities buildings and signage. Come take a look and plan your week on the cheap.

Transmission: Ladies of the '80s

(The Varsity Theater: 1308 4th St. SE, Minneapolis, 612-604-0222)

This week DJ Jake Rudh takes his popular dance night to the Varsity to celebrate the awesome women from the '80s. We're talking strong and bad-ass ladies like Chrissie Hynde, Sade, Cyndi Lauper, Janet Jackson, RETROAPOLIS

(TractorWorks Building, 800 N. Washington Ave., Minneapolis, 612-315-3611)

Mike Welton's oil paintings capture the downtown architecture of the Twin Cities in unexpected ways. The works from his "Urban Extract" series feature closeup details that will make you wonder where you've spotted them before. Think graceful awnings, bits of signage, graffiti, marble arches, and security cameras. Bring a friend and try to figure out which details you've spotted yourself walking through the city or waiting for the bus. 4-7 p.m. Thursday.
