Three free things to do this week


This week we have a celebration for a new pop-up art space, a food party, and a free outdoor movie screening with beer.

Alma Lights Grand Opening

Restaurant Alma is expanding. Before they get fully moved in, they're going to get a little creative. The restaurant has joined forces with Northern to host a pop-up artists space, where 11 artists will come together for parties, exhibitions, and interactive installments. This Wednesday things get started with a reception. The pre-party isn't free, but arrive after 7 p.m. and you'll find a cash bar, edibles, and cool pieces from talents including Laura Bigger, Aaron Dysart, Jess Hirsch, Ifrah Mansour, and Sean Higgins. 7 to 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Super Troopers


(Summit Brewing, 910 Montreal Cir., St. Paul)

The sequel to this 2001 cult classic starts filming soon. Before that happens, Summit Brewing and Minnesota Film and TV for a free screening of the original, which follows a bunch of lazy, prankster cops who find themselves doing actual work (solving murders, busting up drug rings) on the eve of losing their jobs to budget cuts. Will they end up fired? Will they open a disco roller rink? Find out this Wednesday. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair. The beer will be flowing, and Native American eats will be offered via Tatanka food truck. Come even it's if raining; they'll move inside if the weather is not cooperating. 6 p.m. Wednesday (screening at 7:30 p.m.).

Third Thursday: Art of Food

"Ferran Adrià: Notes on Creativity" opens today at Mia. The Spanish chef and artist has been known to blur the lines between his two interests, demonstrating how art is to be consumed and food can be viewed as art. To celebrate, the museum has planned a bunch of tasty treats for the eyes and the stomach. Food trucks Cafe Racer, Tatanka Truck, Hot Indian Foods, Geno's Gelato, and Brava will be offering delicious eats. The Midwest Pantry Local Food Poster show will be on display, Katie Lupton will be hosting a letterpress activity where folks can print out a recipe card, and a photobooth will support Second Harvest Heartland. Beer and wine will flow, and Fury Things will jam out as well. The event will be outdoors, weather permitting. 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
