Student designers give a fresh take on fashion for FLUX

This Saturday, 17 senior students from the University of Minnesota's College of Design will demonstrate what they've learned during their time at the U for the 45th Annual Apparel Design Senior Fashion Show: FLUX.

"Flux means constant state of change," says Lucie Jane Mulligan, a student designer who will be featured at the event. "Our show has a very diverse group of designers. We have everything from menswear to yoga wear to plus size to children's clothing. The show is a constant state of change. When people come to FLUX, there's something new on the runway every three minutes."

Mulligan, who says her biggest inspiration is designing for women of different body types, created a collection of eveningwear designed for women sizes 8 to 16.

"I wanted to design for an industry that hasn't been designed for yet," Mulligan says. "While there is a straight-size fashion industry and a plus-size industry, there really isn't much in the middle."

The designers have complete artistic freedom to create their collection with the only requirement being that they create four looks.

"We're set free and can create basically anything that we want, which is really exciting and freeing," Mulligan says. "It's also terrifying because it's the first time that the fashion industry and people other than your close friends and family are going to see your designs. Because you are set free to do anything, you're on your own. You get to decide what you do. There's fear and excitement coming out for the first time as a designer."

The senior show is a culmination of everything that the students have learned in their design courses at the U of M. Because this is their first show, Mulligan says that the students bring fresh ideas to the runway.

"I think we bring a new perspective on fashion," Mulligan says. "We live in a time where everything is changing. Different versions of beauty are being accepted, and different styles are coming out. Coming straight from school and jumping into the fashion industry gives you a different perspective on the industry that hasn't been developed entirely and is still changing. I think what's exciting is that we all have a unique aesthetic."

This is the first time that FLUX will be a part of MNfashion's Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week, and Mulligan hopes that this with draw a new audience to the evening.

"We're able to bring in a whole new group of people to FLUX who are going to be experiencing something different," Mulligan says. "It's exciting to be able to bring a new crowd to the event."

Sophomore and junior students will also show garments on the runway.
