If you're a connoisseur of local fashion design, you surely know that college fashion shows are great places to scout out and identify fresh young designers whose wares/wears will likely be hot ticket items in the local boutiques come next season. And year after year St. Catherine University has been one to watch, having churned out a number of pretty amazing designers that have made names for themselves locally and beyond. St. Kate's alums include Twin Cities faves like Amanda Christine, Michele Henry (Rapport Apparel), Christine Carmichael, Jenny Carle, Amanda Chaffin, and Maritza Ramirez -- who also has the honor of emceeing this Saturday's St. Kate's Katwalk show.
The runway show revolves around environmentally sustainable design alternatives such as upcycled and repurpoused vintage and other earth-friendly styles plus original work by students in the Apparel Design and Visual Merchandising program. The flashy showcase, dubbed "Altered Appearance" will feature over 70 looks by senior and junior designers as well as select garments by underclass women. Graduating designers will present their senior lines as the feather in the cap of their time at St. Kate's and a post-runway meet n' greet will be held so attendees can get up close and personal with the garments and their creators. Senior designers presenting full lines include Ariel Bock, Christy Cameron, Anna Taney, Gao Nung Xiong, and Emilee Kuznar. Junior designers showing mini-collections include Laura Ackmann, Ayah Ahmed, Jenn Bratvold, Mary Ehlers, Caitlin Gottschalk, Abby Hansen, and Hitomi Wong. First year students will show one dress and one sustainable garment each.
Saturday May 15th, 7:30pm; Rauenhorst Ballroom at Coeur de Catherine, 2004 Randolph Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55105. This show traditionally sells out, so get your tickets a.s.a.p. by calling 651-699-6690 or by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Tickets are $8.
