Square Lake Festival announces date, lineup

After taking a break in 2010 Square Lake Festival, a daylong music and film event that encourages green transportation, will be celebrating its ninth year this summer. Folks who make the trip out to Square Lake, located just outside of Stillwater, will be treated to band jams and movie screenings.

[jump] The festival is set for August 13. Musical acts will include Happy Apple, who will play two sets, as well as Kill the Vultures, Ben Weaver, Night Moves, Molly Dean, and Humanda.

Perhaps one of the more unique aspects of the festival is that each year a band is invited to create a live score to play during the film screening. This year, the Orange Mighty Trio will perform original music for La Riviere Du Hibou, a 1962 flick that follows a Civil War-era Southern planter as he attempts to flee from his imminent hanging. In addition to the main event, over 45 locally-made shorts will also be screened.

As usual, festival-goers are encouraged to bike out to the event. Those who make the 78-mile round trip will be rewarded with a 75 percent admission discount. The last event saw over 200 cyclists making the trip, and often even the musicians performing bike to the event.
