Have you been looking to buy a beautiful box made for storing condoms and lube? No problem. Hannah Kuhlmann's work will be on hand. Perhaps you'd like some hand-knit thongs? Or how about a fancy pillow with condom pockets for that special someone? Need some pasties for New Year's Eve? You can obtain all of these items and more from the local painters, collage artists, photographers, knitters, and sewers participating in this year's show.
This is the second year that Smitten Kitten will be hosting this art and craft show. Clare Jacky, business manager and event coordinator for the store, says the event was so successful last year that they've decided to make it an annual tradition. "I am excited about the range of art and crafts we have this year," she states. "I think there are so many possibilities when it comes to erotic art and crafts, it is nice to see so many different interpretations of it." Jacky also feels that the show is all about community; supporting local art and giving a place for people to express themselves. "It is really important to us to support local producers whether they make art, pasties, floggers, or dildos," she says.
Artist Chris Park, who creates the wonderful vibrator best friend prints will be returning, as will Lollycopter's Joan Vorderbruggen who takes vintage slips and dyes them in different colors, embellishing them with trim.
When Vorderbruggen participated in the show last year, her creations were so well received that she was asked to display her work year-round. She has also been hired to change up the window display each month. For her "upcycled" vintage slips, she uses multiple hand dyes, and then embellishes pieces with such accouterments as Bohemian crystals, hand beading, satin bows, crotchet trip, and multicolored doilies. She incorporates lace, pom poms, satin, and, occasionally, faux fur into her elaborate designs. Vorderbruggen, who is also a nurse, storyteller, and costumer, creates everything from wearable art to heirloom redesign. She's passionate about developing eco-conscious designs that recycle used and discarded vintage textiles. She is also frequently hired to do custom designs, including wedding dresses.
